Jen's Art

High School (1986-1989)

My Irmo and Chapin High art teachers helped me branch out a little.  I discovered new media and a few new non-equine subjects.  I did a lot of the covers for Chapin High's programs and publications, and even freelanced logos, displays, and art locally.  During these years, I began developing a sense of design and form as well as a love of typography.  My favorite medium was ink on paper because using rapidograph pens, I was able to incorporate sharp detail with a high level of control.

Elementary and Middle Years (1976-1986)

It's obvious that I was a little obsessed with horses during my early years.  I read anything and everything related to horses (especially Marguerite Henry and Walter Farley's Black Stallion series), made my friends play horse with me, and took horseback riding lessons while we lived in North Carolina.  I suspect my obsession started in West Germany, where in the late 70s we lived next to a big equestrian center.  My friend, Ina, and I would go watch the horses and riders practice and sometimes try and help the staff cool down the horses after their workouts.
